We are grateful to William Tolar, son of Thomas S. Tolar, LTjg 1945-1946, for finding these photos in family memorabilia in 2005, and sharing them with us. Ltjg Thomas Tolar is 7th from the left in the photo (#15) of the officers.

Carl Lloyd (RM3 45-46) has recognized that most of the Tolar photos were likely taken at Pensacola in August 1945 where the change of command (Copeman to Parsons) took place. Gearing in its first year also visited Boston, Norfolk, Casco Bay and GTMO. The aircraft carrier in photo #19 is USS Ranger CV-4, which had a distinguished war record in the Atlantic Fleet and was decommissioned in October of 1946.

Help is needed to identify the Gearing sailors in these photos. It is likely that most of them are plankowners. We will add captions to the photos as we learn the details. Email this web page editor, Don Provost donprov@optonline.net, with all the information you have! Mention each photo by its number.

Photos #2, #3, #4, #5, #9, #13 #14, #15 and #18 have been updated with some names, thanks to Warren Groeneman (SOM2 45-46), Carl Lloyd (RM3 45-46), Dominick Giampietro (MM1 44-46) Art Jackson (RD2 45) and Fred Burkett (BKR2 45) and Ron Stephens, son of Benjamin Henry Stephens (S2c SK 45) and David Sullivan, son of Raymond John Sullivan (S2c 45).
