USS Gearing's 1964-1965 Mediterranean cruise
stretched almost four months, from 8 September 1964
to 30 January 1965, sailing from and returning to
homeport Newport, Rhode Island. We were attached to the
Sixth Fleet for much of the time. For the duration of the
cruise we were the flagship for Commander Destroyer
Squadron 20, with COMDESRON20 and staff embarked.
